Five things you did not know about Sharpeis

Big Dog | December 4th, 2011

A dog with a wrinkled face and rough coat, these best describe the Shar-Pei (literally meaning “sand skin”). Despite its description, this breed was researched to be one of the most ancient breeds today and was once declared as the world’s rarest dog breed. With this title, what could be other wonderful facts the Shar-Pei holds? Let look at these five interesting facts about this breed.

Shar Pei

1. Black Tongue

Shar-Pei have bluish-black (sometimes lavender) colored tongues similar to the Chow-Chow. That is why there are some speculations that the Chow-Chow and Shar-Pei likely have a common root or ancestry. Actually, a normal looking pink tongue is undesirable in dog show competitions.

2. Shy Dog

Many people observe that Shar-Peis tend to shy away when they attempt to touch the dog’s head or when approached abruptly. This is because their hooded eyes make it harder for them to see especially in the sides. They behave otherwise when approached from the front.

3. Rocky Beginnings

The Communist Revolution in China caused a dramatic decrease in the breed’s population. In an effort to save the Sharpei, 12 dogs were imported from Hong-Kong to the U.S. They are of inferior quality than today’s dogs and are actually street dogs with nasty dispositions.

4. Three Coats

There are actually three varieties of Shar-Pei coats although only 2 are acceptable in dog shows. The first is the Horsecoat, described as sand-paper texture and the other is Brushcoat, a bit longer than the horsecoat and is distinguishable by the fluffy tail. The third is the Bearcoat, which resembles a Chow-Chow and is longer than the other two but is not permitted in the show ring.

5. Two of a Kind

The Chinese Shar-Pei is different in appearance from the U.S. version. The Chinese differentiate the types by calling the Western as meat-mouth and the other as bone-mouth.

Cute Shar Pei snoring

Big Dog | March 11th, 2011

We can hear a really endearing Shar Pei snoring in this video. Younger Shar Peis snore more loudly than the older ones. Puppies are the best snorers. If you aren’t a heavy sleeper or don’t snore more loudly than your Shar Pei, it is not advised to keep them in your bedroom during sleep. Shar Peis also snort funnily and this can be mistaken for growling.

Is a Shar-Pei a good choice for me?

Big Dog | November 5th, 2010

If you would like to have a dog that is loyal, playful and intelligent, then the Shar-Pei is one of the best breeds for you. These dogs are also active and brave; therefore they can become excellent watchdogs. They have a strong, easy-going nature that can make them try to be dominant in the house, so their master should be able to show them who is the pack leader at home. This is why early obedience training and socialization is recommended for the owners. The Shar-Pei loves children and they can get on well with non-canine pets, for example cats if they are raised together. The dog usually displays dominant behavior when there are other dogs in the house. This breed requires long, daily walks with their family, but does not require a yard if enough exercise is provided for them during the day.

The coat of the Shar-Pei is one of the 3 different types: the horse, the bear or the brush. All coat types require daily care and brushing, although the breed is a minimal shedder. Sadly, these dogs are prone to health issues like entropion, hereditary skin problems and kidney failure.

Training the Shar-Pei is easy as they are intelligent and like to learn. Housebreaking should cause no problem, although the breed tends to become dominant if not cared properly.

All in all, the Shar-Pei is ideal for families with children and other smaller pets and will be able to provide the dogs enough exercise an love day by day.

I hope this short article will be helpful for you to decide whether the Shar-Pei is the best breed for you and for your family.

Can a Shar-Pei tolerate extremes in temperature?

Big Dog | July 22nd, 2010

As for all dogs, it is true for Shar Peis too, that it isn’t recommended to leave them in the hot sunshine for very long time; they can’t tolerate it very well, because their body get overheated.
In case of very hot weather they need shade and plenty of fresh water.
Shar Pei dogs can tolerate cold weather quite well, but they aren’t supposed to be kept outdoors. You should put some vaseline on their paws before taking them for a walk on the winter, to avoid injuries caused by salt. This breed likes to be near the owner all the time, so shouldn’t be kept in garden or kennel.
