If you would like to have a dog that is loyal, playful and intelligent, then the Shar-Pei is one of the best breeds for you. These dogs are also active and brave; therefore they can become excellent watchdogs. They have a strong, easy-going nature that can make them try to be dominant in the house, so their master should be able to show them who is the pack leader at home. This is why early obedience training and socialization is recommended for the owners. The Shar-Pei loves children and they can get on well with non-canine pets, for example cats if they are raised together. The dog usually displays dominant behavior when there are other dogs in the house. This breed requires long, daily walks with their family, but does not require a yard if enough exercise is provided for them during the day.

The coat of the Shar-Pei is one of the 3 different types: the horse, the bear or the brush. All coat types require daily care and brushing, although the breed is a minimal shedder. Sadly, these dogs are prone to health issues like entropion, hereditary skin problems and kidney failure.

Training the Shar-Pei is easy as they are intelligent and like to learn. Housebreaking should cause no problem, although the breed tends to become dominant if not cared properly.

All in all, the Shar-Pei is ideal for families with children and other smaller pets and will be able to provide the dogs enough exercise an love day by day.

I hope this short article will be helpful for you to decide whether the Shar-Pei is the best breed for you and for your family.

The Shar-Pei is an extrmemely intelligent breed of dog. It can be stubborn and independent, but its loyalty to its owner is unwavering. It is considered to be active, dominant, playful and brave. They are very people-oriented, and are considered to be “people dogs”, that are more friendly towards people than other animals. If a Shar-Pei is raised with other pets and children it will not be a problem in the long-run. Although they have somewhat of a frowning and aggressive expression as adults, it is not because they are constantly angry. It is just the fold of wrinkles!

They are calm, and have a sweet disposition. Having a background of fighting, they make great watch-dogs,and not only devoted companions. Having an inherently dominant streak as a breed characteristic, the breed will take over as boss, if he sees that his owner is soft or uncertain. Therefore it is advisable that the owner of a Shar-Pei have experience and assertiveness, when endeavouring to start a relationship with this breed. They are astute, but they will mostly only take orders from that family member, which they deem to be worthy to as their owner. Therefore, training a Shar-Pei is best advised to come from the person, who is truly the owner. Like with many dominant and assertive breeds, the Shar-Pei is no exception to early socialization. It needs to be introduced to people and other dogs and animals from an early age, so that it becomes balanced and not aggressive. Through all its seemingly high-maintenance character, it is a lovable breed that will quickly earn both your love and your respect!
