It is very common to hear the Shar Pei make these noises and there’s no way to have them stop.

But owners must be aware to what is normal grunting or snorting as to what isn’t. If the Shar Pei makes these sounds accompanied with cough and physical weaknesses such as a limp tail, non-responsiveness and fever, then better take them to the vet straight away. Pneumonia can strike the Shar Pei and only through a blood test and chest radiograph can it be detected. Causes of this may be bacteria such as E. Coli, Klebsiella and Bordetella. These can be fought off using antibiotics. So if there is something off with a Shar Pei’s behavior, it would be safe to have them checked.

Avoid unnecessary vet bills! Do your dog’s basic health check!

This should be done on a leash since you must never forget that this breed is a fighting dog, for all its lovable appearance. It is necessary for the Chinese Shar-Pei to be held back with a leash. They like to be let free, but make sure you are in an area that does not have people or dogs that may provoke him. They also love to play, so feel free to play with them regularly!

Wrinkle cleaning is important for this breed, since moisture and dirt can get trapped in between the folds of the wrinkles and this may cause inflammation and infection if not cleaned properly. Regular massaging and brushing with a bristle brush will keep the coat shiny and healthy. Teeth need to be regularly cleaned and checked, as do the tiny and sensitive little ears, since they fold inwards. Much like the wrinkles, they are susceptible to infection yet again. As for the toenails, you need to be clip them every ten days or so. If you keep to this strict grooming routine, your wrinkly friend will be right as rain! :)
