- In the late 1970’s, the Shar-Pei was listed in the Guiness Book of Records as the world’s rarest dog.
- Unknown outside of China, it was rescued from extinction in the 1960’s.

The Chow Chow is the only other dog to share the charactristic blue-black tongue with the Shar-Pei. Both are Asian dogs, so it seems somewhere along the line they are related.
