Is it normal for a Shar Pei to grunt and snort when breathing?

Ann | November 10th, 2009

This sand skinned canine companion looks so adorable with its wrinkle face and loose skin just waiting to be squished and hugged.  But these dogs have a trait that some people may find either endearing or simply irritating and bothersome: grunting and snorting. It is very common to hear the Shar Pei make these noises and there’s no way to have them stop.

But owners must be aware to what is normal grunting or snorting as to what isn’t. If the Shar Pei makes these sounds accompanied with cough and physical weaknesses such as a limp tail, non-responsiveness and fever, then better take them to the vet straight away. Pneumonia can strike the Shar Pei and only through a blood test and chest radiograph can it be detected. Causes of this may be bacteria such as E. Coli, Klebsiella and Bordetella. These can be fought off using antibiotics. So if there is something off with a Shar Pei’s behavior, it would be safe to have them checked.

What can be done with an aggressive Shar Pei?

Ann | October 27th, 2009

The Shar-Pei is similar to the Chow Chow in having the unique blue tongue which seems to have a heavenly story or legend behind it. The breed is known for its scrunched face and “sand paper” skin that is said to help them escape the grasps of attackers or bites from other dogs. Although they look cute, they are also known for aggressive tendencies. This sprouts from their origins as fighting dogs.

If not properly socialized or trained by an experienced handler, these tendencies from bloodlines may take over.  Extensive familiarization to people is one method of making them feel comfortable. It is also good to know that these dogs have an instinct to detect if someone or something is wrong. Being dominant, they can be a problem with other dogs of the same sex and can be a hazard to smaller animals as it will chase them down and probably kill them. The solution for easing this aggression is having a firm handler for obedience and socialization.
